Purpose Statement

 

The Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Transportation Coordinator.

 

The Springfield School District is Missouri’s largest public school district and has built a reputation of academic excellence based on the outstanding performance of our students and schools. About 25,000 students attend 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, 9 middle schools, 5 high schools and a variety of alternative education and choice programs.

 

The job of Transportation Coordinator is done for the purpose/s of providing support within the student transportation services area with specific responsibilities for the development and coordination of bus routes; processing service requests pertaining to routine and emergency maintenance issues; maintaining department records in accordance with mandated requirements; and dispatching substitute school bus drivers.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Collaborates with other District personnel (e.g. school police, coaches, special education, etc.) for the purpose of determining driver and equipment requirements for route changes, special trips, driver training, bus maintenance, etc.
  • Compiles a variety of data (e.g. incident reports, inspections, student counts, fleet mileage, etc.) for the purpose of developing formal reports, conveying information and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Informs school personnel and parents of practices (e.g. rules, regulations, laws, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for their follow-up action.
  • Maintains service related files and records (e.g. mileage logs, servicing schedules and worksheets, etc.) for the purpose of prioritizing routine maintenance; minimizing vehicle damage; and/or avoiding service disruptions.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Processes a variety of materials (e.g. service orders, route changes, fleet miles, invoicing, etc.) for the purpose of updating and distributing information, authorizing action and/or complying with mandated requirements.
  • Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions (e.g. route changes, student disciplinary issues, parental complaints, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for decision making impacting student transportation services.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff (e.g. stop locations, schedules, state regulated policies, etc.) for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services. 
  • Schedules work assignments of substitute school bus drivers (e.g. daily routes, field trips, athletic events, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring completion of transportation routes in a timely manner.

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Performs the duties of a school bus driver as may be required for the purpose of ensuring adequate coverage to address route and/or trip requirements.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)

 

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: assessment instruments and techniques; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; health standards; and methods of instruction and training.

 

Skills are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: analyzing data; comparing results; conducting interviews; conducting meetings; counseling and mentoring employees; enforcing rules and regulations; facilitating meetings; and interviewing candidates.

 

Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Employee Punctuality and Appearance

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected  to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Springfield School District and is appropriate for their position.

Terms of Employment

 

The terms of employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Missouri public school and Board of Education policy, as those laws and policies may change from time to time.  If your position is represented by Collective Bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between SPS and that Collective Bargaining representative.

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: lifting, pushing, pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing.  The job is performed under some varying atmospheric conditions.
